About this artwork

An oil painting depicting an elderly, bearded saint draped in a vibrant red robe, leaning over an open book placed on a wooden table. A human skull rests on a stack of books to the left, while the figure holds a feather quill in one hand, writing intensely under dramatic chiaroscuro lighting against a dark, shadowy background. The composition captures a somber, contemplative mood with rich earthy tones, bright red drapery accents, and a thin, glowing halo above the man's head.
