About this artwork

This dramatic classical artwork features high-contrast chiaroscuro lighting, highlighting several muscular figures laboring to lift a wooden cross on which an older bearded man lies. Set against a dark, shadowy background, the dynamic composition emphasizes intense physical effort, emotional tension, and stark illumination across the bodies and clothing of the subjects.
